Reddy History

The largest single community grouping in Andhra Pradesh today is of the Reddi community. The name is also written in english as Reddy. They are found all over Andhra Pradesh and the neighbouring states. In Andhra Pradesh, the Reddis are considered traditional village headmen. The duties of headmen included the collection of tax, guarding the village and basically representing the village in dealing with outsiders or even the government. Physically they are very well built and strong, 'solid farmer stock' according to some english observers, and they retain a residual military -aristocratic tradition. (In short they are upper caste). Several members of the community are very wealthy landowners and businessmen, but most are small farmers. In most areas of Andhra Pradesh, in the small villages it is the Reddi who speaks authoritatively on behalf of the village: they are the traditional "leaders" of the village. But this is changing fast. Younger members are losing interest in living in rural areas and striking out to work in towns …even to the USA.

There are various sects/clans among the reddis. The ones I could get some details about are the Panta reddis, including the Velanadu , Paakanadu and Motati Reddis ( these are old geographical areas) i.e. the Krishna-Guntur , Nellore and Chittoor Reddis and upland area. In Telangana there are the the Keti Reddis, There are other subdivisions but I am still collecting information.

Roots of the Reddis:

The Reddis do not constitute a ethnic group, really. There are several strands which go to make the Reddis of today. They appear to be basically Deccan plateau inhabitants, which includes Maharashtra, karnataka and Andhra of today. Another point to note, in several areas the term Reddi was treated as a sort of title for anyone who was appointed as village headman. Usually this meant a soldier, who got along fine with the other headmen. Gradually the descendants
would be absorbed into the larger Reddi grouping.

The earliest reference we have to anyone resembling the Reddis are the Rathis and the Maha rathis before 200 BC. These kings ruled over small principalities in the Deccan plateau area of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra before the Satavahanas and mauryas. They have left coins in northern Andhra Pradesh, also in Kurnool district, and near Pune etc. The coins are found in the levels between the megalithic and satavahana levels in excavations. The term Rathi might
refer to "one riding a chariot" (Ratha=horse drawn chariot in prakrit and old sanskrit). A grander Rathi king might be called Maha rathi.

The Satavahanas intermarried with the maharathis. Sri Satakarni married Naaganika Devi, daughter of a maha rathi.(221 -198BC). The Satavahanas ruled over Malwa and parts of Gujarat as well and clashed
with the Sakas -Pahlavas (scythians and pallavas) and also intermarried with them. The Deccan was covered with thick forests, only scattered areas were under agriculture, and that too likely slash and burn primitive agriculture. Castes and communities were still forming. Even feudalism hadn't really developed in those days, the tribal structure was slowly dissolving with the influence of Buddhism. So one shouldn't take the caste thing too seriously.

The next mention of the Reddis seems to be during the rise of the Rashtrakutas. The Reddis are also called ratthi, raddi and rattodi in old inscriptions dating back to the 9th century. The Rashtrakuta soldiers were among the elite troops of the Chalukyas: they founded an empire after the Badami chalukyas faded from the scene. A section who migrated to rajasthan became the well known rathodis, who later are found as one of the Rajput clans. After the Rashtrakuta empire faded away we find interesting inscriptions of the succeeding Kalyani Chalukyas in Andhra Pradesh, where Reddis are mentioned (900 ad). They were soldiers appointed as headmen of villages in Medak district by the kalyani Chalukyas. Some of the names mentioned are Mini Raddi and Kati Raddi. (these are surnames even today).

The Reddis in the Telangana region were active in the kakatiya kingdom. (AD 1000-1223). They were knights and barons and subordinate kings who ruled regions, in turn they had to pay taxes/ a part of the plunder and organise troops for campaigns. Several large dams and lakes were constructed by the reddis of the time, and they still serve their purpose..

After the kakatiya kingdom disintegrated many Reddis migrated to coastal Andhra—Addanki and Kondaveedu, and later Rajahmundry on the Godavari and founded their own independent kingdoms which flourished between 1325-1448 AD. Komati Prolaya Vemareddy , son of Komati Prola reddy founded this kingdom . There are foolish explanations of why
the name Komdi or Komati was their surname (apart from silly fake legends, there is an attempt to discover some "jain goddess".)

The actual very simple reason, which sems to have escaped so called scholars, is Komdi or Komda is a name of a tribal deity Kumara, Kumra, Kartikeya, Mayura, Mora, Velan, Murugan— the warlike son of Siva. A merchant community called komati also is derived from this ancient name, while they have very little to do with reddis. While the area and extent may not have been large, these Reddi Raja states are historically significant because Telugu literature got a strong impetus. Vemareddi has left many inscriptions, the well preserved ones detailing the repairs he made to temples like Srisailam and Ahobilam.

During the Vijayanagar empire (roughly 1300 -1600 AD) too they were prominent especially in Rayalseema, where they became independent zamindars or landholders and were constantly engaged in clan feuding. (the feuds continue to this day). The Rayalseema reddis are closely related to the landlord Gowdas of karnataka and the Reddiars of Tamilnad. There are also a few Reddi principalities which managed to survive independently between large warring states, in Mahabubnagar
district (Old Palamoor) like Gadwal and Wanaparthi. The Reddis around these areas have a tradition they are descended from ancient Chalukya ancestors.

Reddis are also prominent in Nellore and Chittoor district also. — in these areas, during Brit times they often visited closeby Madras, took to modern education in the Madras presidency, and also joined the military.

In the Golkonda region, all during the Turkish rule and recent Nizams too , the Reddis continued to be headmen, village policemen and tax collectors and farmers. The larger Reddi landlords were styled as Desais and Doras. ( and continued their bitter nine-hundred year old rivalry with the Velamas, another feudal clan. The rivalry exists to this day in rural areas). Several Reddis were noblemen during the Nizams time, too.

There does not seem to be any ethnic /social connection between the plains Reddis and the tribal Kondareddi of the Godavari hills.

The Reddis of these various regions have different traditions and notions and do not seem to have much in common with each other : they have more in common with other communities of their regions. Given the background one would expect they are all feudal reactionary upper caste bigots : not so, they were prominent in reform activities too. In medieval times they were enthusisatic backers of Saivite and Vaishnavite reform movements too. In south coastal areas the saivite
Reddis intermarried with Brahmins. In Telangana area they used to wed girls from other communities but the offspring wouldnt bear the clan name. In north Andhra Pradesh, during the communist-led Telangana people's movement against the feudal Nizam state in the 1940's, there were many comrades from a reddy background. Large number of Reddis
went into business especially construction and films and have made a name for themselves in the field. –Kalabandhu Subbiramireddy, for instance. (I believe he has several websites. Any URLs?). In recent times they are prominent in the world pharmaceutical industry too, like Dr Anji Reddy. Dr. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was a President of India. (etc etc, many others. Please send a good list if you have )

Taken as a whole, they are healthy, strong, cheerful, generally smiling, broadminded, and impulsively generous. They are somewhat conservative, but not really clannish: managing soldiers or running a village or district or kingdom efficiently means you have to take along everybody with you: the feudal man management skills honed over the centuries are still useful.

Socially overall, it appears today their outlook or watchword is " status quo" or 'slow gradual change is best'. Womenfolk are not as independent minded as in some other communities. In politics they are usually backers of the Congress : they are not well represented in the Telugu Desam party which is in power in the state. While the older generation of Reddis had a feeling for the "land" and flair for farming, nowadays there is a rapid change in rural areas: the younger Reddis are losing interest in rural life (not just farming, but the ramifications like district politics) and migrating to the cities, becoming urban professionals and businessmen. Fairly large numbers have migrated to the USA. They are prominent in Telugu organisations in the USA.

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy: Former President of India

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, one of the foremost political leaders from Andhra Pradesh, was born on May 19, 1913 in the Anantapur district. He came from a respectable and well-to-do family. He had his early education at Adyar, Madras and then at the Arts College at Anantapur. While still in college he gave up his studies to participate in the freedom struggle launched by Mahatma Gandhi. He first took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1931. Within a few years he came into prominence as an influential peasant leader. He participated in various struggles against the British and was imprisoned several times. Sanjeeva Reddy took an active part in the Quit India Movement. In 1946 Sanjeeva Reddy was elected to the Madras Legislative Assembly and later on he became the Secretary of the Congress Legislature Party in Madras. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly in India.

Sanjeeva Reddy held various important positions in the Congress and became a member of the Andhra Provincial Congress Committee. He was in the Congress Working Committee and of the Central Parliamentary Board. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952 and served as a member for a little over a year. When the Andhra Province was separated from Madras and T. Prakasam became the Chief Minister of Andhra, Sanjeeva Reddy was appointed Deputy Chief Minister. When the new Andhra Pradesh was constituted Sanjeeva Reddy became its first Chief Minister and served in that capacity from November 1956 to December 1959. In December 1959 he was elected President of the Indian National Congress and he continued in that office till May 1962. He again became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1962 for one year. Later he was appointed to the Central Cabinet.

Sanjeeva was speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1967 to 1969. He then contested for the office of the President as the official Congress candidate as against V. V. Giri who was then the Vice-President. The Presidential contest proved to be of momentous significance in the history of the Congress, resulting in the split of the Congress with an overwhelming section siding with Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who had rebelled against the old guard, headed by Mr. Nijalingappa, which came to be known as the Congress (O). Thus the Congress came to be divided into the Congress (O) and Congress (R) parties. The President election went in favour of Mr. V. V. Giri.

The, split in the Congress gradually widened. In the 1971 mid-term election, the Congress (R) had a landslide victory and the Congress (O) was reduced to a party of little significance. After the defeat of the Congress (R) in the Lok Sabha elections of 1977, Sanjeeva Reddy was elected at the instance of the Janata Party as the President of the Republic. In 1981 he retired.

Telugu Cinema: Interview with Srinivas Reddy Director

Srinivasa Reddy made a name for himself as comedy director with back-to-back small-budget comedy hits like Adirindayya Chandram and Tata Birla Madhyalo Laila. His latest film Yamagola Malli Modalaindi is all set to hit the marquee on 23 August. Here is our exclusive interview with the director -

Background:
I was born in 1969 in Velagalavari Palem (Tanuku mandal) of West Godavari district. I completed my primary education in Velagalavari Palem before moving to Penumantra for high school studies. Later on I joined in DNR inter college in Bhimavaram where famous movie personalities like SV Krishna Reddy, Trivikram and Sunil studied. I had to drop out of the college in the first year and go to Karnataka due to some unavoidable circumstances.

I joined as an assistant for popular Kannada director Vijaya Reddy in 1984. That is when I got introduced to M Shyam Prasad Reddy. My first film in Telugu was Shyam Prasad Reddy's Ahuthi. I worked in direction department under Kodi Rama Krishna for that film. Later on I worked as an assistant director for various films directed by G Ram Mohan Rao and Y Nageswara Rao. Y Nageswara Rao used to treat me like a brother and there is lot of his influence on my work. I worked as co-director with Siva Nageswara Rao for three more films. He encouraged me a lot.

During that time my friends (Anand Reddy, Srinivasa Reddy, Ramalingeswara Reddy and Rama Krishna Reddy) joined their hands with me to produce my debut film `Ashadam Pellikoduku' (1997) with Ali as hero. Then I directed a suspense film titled `February 14 Necklace Road' with Suman and Bhanu Priya in the main lead. Then I directed a film titled Andam. This film was produced by MS Reddy and T Subbirami Reddy. That film is still languishing in cans. I suffered a lot for the next four years.

That is when Trinadh Pedhiredla (PRO) took me to N Suryaprakasa Rao and introduced me. We made Adirindayya Chandram with Sivaji as hero. This film was completed in the scheduled time due to the help of Sivaji and his friend Ammiraju. It worked well at box office. It was N Surya Prakasa Rao who gave me life as a director. After that I directed Tata Birla Madhyalo Laila. This film became a hit and got me recognition as a comedy director.

Tell us about your latest project Yamagola Malli Modalaindi?
When I was doing promos for Tata Birla Madhyalo Laila in Frame Graphics studios, Raja Sekhar (one of the partners) told me that we were going to make a film together. Then I told him that we can mix my kind of comedy and their kind of graphics to come up with a storyline. That is how Yamagola Malli Modalaindi started.

We have seen many Yama films in the past. How different is Yamagola Malli Modalaindi?
All the films we have seen dealt with the hero meeting with an accident and going to Yamalokam. Then he fights with Yama and returns to earth. In the end, hero tricks Yama with a senti scene and sends him away permanently. But in this film, Yama comes directly to earth to take the life away of a person.

Tell us about characterizations?

1. Srikanth: Srikanth did the role of Jr. Yama (grandson of Lord Yama played by K Satyanarayana). Srikanth proved as a versatile artist with the films like Operation Duryodhana and Shankar Dada Zindabad. He is an extraordinary performer. In my opinion, Srikanth is the next actor outside Nandamuri heroes who can deliver terrific performances in pouranikas. He comes to earth to do his duty in this film.

2. Venu: Venu did the role of Jr. Chitragupta. We created scenes in such a way to suit his body language. His comedy in this film is going to be a good relief.

3. Heroines: Meera Jasmine did the role of a soft and kind hearted person. Reema Sen did the role of sub-inspector of police. Her role is of rough and tough nature. The entire story revolves around Meera Jasmine's character.

4. Kaikala Satyanarayana: All Yama backdrop films with Kaikala Satyanarayana doing the role of Yama became blockbusters. We added some comedy by making him a BP patient and diabetic.

5. Allu Ramalingaiah: We used graphics to create Allu Ramalingaiah doing Chitragupta character.

6. Krishna Bhagawan: Krishna Bhagawan did pivotal roles in my earlier films. This film too is no exception. He did the role of Narada. He is a huge plus point to this film.

Tell us about the music?
Jeevan Thomas has composed nice music for this film. He worked with senior music directors like MS Viswanadhan, Rammurthy, Ilayaraja and AR Rehman as music conductor. He has deep knowledge in carnatic, western and Indian classical music. There are five songs in this album. The audio went down well with the music lovers. This music will help the success of the film.

What are the highlights of Yamagola Mallimodalaindi?
Story and narration are the main highlights. The scenes involving bringing Yama and Chitra Gupta to earth are going to be extraordinary. The scene in which Yama embodies into a doll and the scene in which Srikanth squabbles with six Venus are going to be hilarious. The other main highlight is the interval episode where Srikanth is shown as Kala Yamudu. The graphics in this film have a duration of 1 hour.

Tell us about the producers?
The producers (Amar, Rajasekhar and Satish) have their own graphics and animation company. The graphics in this film have a duration of 1 hour. And those graphics are very well done because the producers own the graphics studios. We had ample time and talented people to do these graphics in an impressive way. It took over 6 months to do graphics work. I am sure that these producers will become big in the future.

You had seen the final version of the film. How did you like it?
I was thrilled looking at the film. There is comedy, action, drama and sentiment in this film. It would be liked by the entire family. After the release of this film, I am expecting offers from big heroes and big production houses.

What is your goal as a director?
I want to make films that gives multiple profits to producer, distributor and exhibitors. My films should also give more value for the money spent by audience. I also would like to do heart touching films like sagara sangamam, matrudevobhava along with commercial films.

What are your future projects?

1. Premabhishekam (Veediki Cancer ledu): This film will sport Srihari and Venu madhav as heroes. Dasari provides story
2. Kuberulu (Veellaku anni appule): Srinivas will produce this film.
3. A film with Srikanth as hero. This film will be produced by an NRI Kishore Putta.
4. A film with Allari Naresh as hero in EVV Cinema banner. Ammiraju will present this film.
5. A film with RR Moviemakers.

Famous Reddys: Shriya Reddy - Interview

The young, vivacious, zesty, spunky and irrepressible actress Shriya Reddy has seen it all. Fame, fortune, glory and a generous dose of glamour. But the VJ, actress is not the one to rest on her father Bharat Reddy's laurels. She is an inspiration when she says: "It only goes to show that if you have it in you, someday, somehow, your chance will come. If you can do it, nothing can stop you — not age, or discouragement, or trouble. Nothing! Some day, Fate will open a door and beckon you in. Though you may be old and hopeless, tired and disappointed, you will obey the summons, just the same, and you will have your reward for all those years of weary waiting."

And it's worth waiting for — take Shriya Reddy's word for it! No youngster could be getting a bigger, more satisfying "kick" out of success than this woman, at twenty three. There has never been a young screen star that fought harder for success. She is sometimes sprightly, sometimes mellow and tolerant and kindly. She has learned her lessons, and she can enjoy her success. She is happy because she can look back and know that she has done it all herself. There is something about Shriya Reddy and you will definitely agree with me.

If you have anything really valuable to contribute to the world it will come through the expression of your own personality, that single spark of divinity that sets you off and makes you different from every other living creature. I always believed in myself and at the cost of sounding pompous I would like to say that today I am here because I've worked hard for it. Parents backing and support is always there but after a point of time you will have to prove yourself and walk on your own. I am constantly motivating myself and kicking myself to go for it.

I am what I am and I say what I feel like, I'm very spontaneous and probably that's the reason why I am a happy person today. Sometime back I was in Hyderabad to host the Film Fare Awards. It was a memorable event. I happened to encounter Rekha, who is unarguably the most enigmatic star. Who is not in awe of her flawless hauteur, her elegance? I always emulated her, was dumbstruck when she came over to me and introduced herself, "Hi I'm Rekha, you are a very beautiful girl." She was actually going over the stage to give the best actor award to Chiranjeevi. It's such an endearing quality to appreciate others. I found the same humility in Chiranjeevi too. While walking down he came up to me and remarked, "My daughter told me that you are very famous amongst the youngsters and you are doing a great job."

Another person Gunnam Gangaraju, is nothing short of a genius. I worked with him and found him to be brilliant man and a wonderful filmmaker. I am doing a film titled Amma Cheppindi in his direction. You will find me bashing up all the goons in it. I can never be this prim and proper sophisticated girl or I can't see myself running around trees. None of my films have the conventional song-and-dance formula or loud clothes or melodramatic dialogues. I am for realistic cinema. I want to be known as an actress. I'd love to do lot more things like getting into the cricket team, and might probably find myself a job as a commentator. I can't crack jokes like Siddhu but I have my own style.

I keep myself grounded and I have my own four boundaries, I won't expose. I don't drink, smoke, I stick to my principles. When I'm not talking you can find me unwinding reading a book or maybe watching a film at home. I'm not orthodox or conservative but i know where to draw the line. You can never find me in a night club. You need to strike a balance somewhere and some point of time in life. We are not Americans.

I have a fair idea about my future plans. I will continue working, produce my own TV shows and utilize my voice for the radio perhaps. A great deal has been spoken about my voice and I am humbled. I remember when I was a child, Ravi Shastri and Sandip Patil came home and I heard them telling my dad that I had a great voice. It's not that I do the talking always. I am a great listener too and are times I just want to stay quite but my family becomes restless, they expect some noise round always. My voice is very infectious I guess. I've short term dreams and I will work hard for it because I know that they are reachable and I can get it. Everything is possible.

Famous Reddys: Sameer Reddy - Interview

Ram Gopal Varma's Shiva changed the lives and goals of many youngsters. Sameer Reddy is one among them. Sameer Reddy is one of the brilliant cinematographers Telugu film industry boasts off today. Idlebrain.com met him on the evening of 27th August 2005 to have an exclusive personal and technical interview. Here are the excerpts -

What is your background and how you became a cinematographer?
I was born in Hyderabad and raised in Rajahmundry. I studied till intermediate in Rajahmundry. As my parents are in leather industry, I am sent to Chennai to do graduation in Leather Technology. I joined Footware Institute in Guindy, Chennai. We are supposed to under go a workshop program before taking up lessons. On the day one, they sent me to work shop where I saw guys and girls stitching chappals by sitting on the floor. I got so scared that I did not return to that institute later.

Rasool is my cousin and Shiva was just released. He took me to watch Shiva film. Watching Shiva film changed the direction of my life. I was never interested in films earlier and did not watch films when I was in Rajahmundry. Rasool studied the operation of steady cam in USA and used it for the first time in Telugu films for Shiva. Rasool was working as assistant to S Gopal Reddy for the department of photography for Shiva film. That is when I decided that I should enter the field of cinematography.

I approached S Gopal Reddy and asked him to take me in his department. He said that there is no wide range for cinematography and asked me to learn graphics. He also spoke to Ramesh Prasad and made me join in Graphics Department of Prasad Labs that is headed by Sai Prasad. I did not like it over there.

One day, I noticed a brand new Beta camera (used for TV) lying there on the floor. I opened that camera. Read the manual and took it on to the building of Prasad Labs. I learnt how to operate it by reading the manual and tried to zoom it on to the road near by. Then I realized that it was Ilayaraja and Venkatesh who were having chitchat. I shot them with Beta camera. I went down, took out the cassette and played it on a high resolution monitor. When I saw the result, it struck me so hard that I wanted to become cinematographer again.

I approached S Gopal Reddy again and asked him to give me a chance. He said that there was no vacancy. That is when I met Teja. Teja was selected as cinematographer for Ram Gopal Varma's Raat. It was Teja's debut film as cinematographer. I approached Teja and Teja immediately took me in as his assistant. I worked with Teja for films like Antham, Rakshana, Money and Baazee.

I got my break as cinematographer with a Hindi film titled Bhai (Sunil Shetty, Sonali Bendre and Pooja Batra), which is a remake of Telugu film Anna (Raja Sekhar). Later on I did five Hindi films Jaanwar, ek Rishta, Hum Tum Par Marte Hain etc. Those projects used to take more than an year each to complete.

During that time, a Hollywood film titled `Crocodile 2: Death Swamp' (2002) is being shot in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Rasool was the cinematographer. He wanted me to be the cinematographer for the second unit of that film. I accepted it. Then I was offered the job of cinematographer for a Hollywood film titled `Quicksand' which was to shot in RFC.

Usha Kiron Movies was planning to produce Anandam film in the direction of Seenu Vytla. They took me in for that film. Anandam is my first Telugu film as cinematographer. After that worked for films like Kalusukovalani, Jayam, Manmadhudu, Malliswari, Nijam, Satyam, Naa Autograph, Dhairyam, Avunanna Kadanna.

I am currently doing Modati Cinema in the direction of Venkat Kuchipudi. I would be doing Teja's latest film which would be going to floors on 10th September. I signed a Tamil film in the direction of Nivas (Shool fame).

What is cinematography is all about?
I feel that cinematography is all about how you control the light and manipulate it to suit the mood and requirement of scene/film. One need to use commonsense and the experience derived by observation. Technical courses might help you technically, but it is commonsense that differentiate the right one from the rest.

Talking about the lighting aspect, I observed that you threw better light more on the actors/actresses that are important and give inadequate lighting for others in Avunanna Kadanna film?

Yes, there are many scenes in that film that involve more than 10 people at a time. But only one or two people are important and others would be standing there just for the sake of it. To make sure that audiences are focused on the important characters, I deliberately disparaged the artists with different kinds of light.

What kind of coordination Cinematographer need from director to give good output?
If a cinematographer were involved from the script level, we have netter understanding of mood and soul of the film and shoot the film to complement it. All the new directors are doing lots of homework and making cinematographers involved from the script level. Venkat Kuchipudi gave me a bind script even before starting of the shooting of Modati Cinema.

Cinematographer also needs to set the mood for a film. There are certain good directors who can't express what they want. It is the responsibility of cinematographer to understand and grasp what the director wants.

What is the role of cinematographer in exploring locations for films?
We have very limited locations where the films are shot. And our directors specify certain locations which are already exploited in numerous films. For example, Venkat Kuchipudi asked me to shoot a song for Modati Cinema in Warangal where a song in Varsham film was shot. He wanted me to watch the video of the film to get an idea. I refused to watch that film and went to Warangal location along with my departments to choose the locations and framing patterns. We have to exploit the places from new angles.

What kind of cameras cinematographers use now?
We used to work with ARRI3 cameras earlier. And now we use 435 cameras.

What is the advantage of 435?

We can do certain things like ramping shots and changing the frame rate from high speed to normal using camera. For cameras used earlier, we need to do ramping and change of frame rate by using visual effects by transferring spool into digital format and. Transferring the spool into digital format and revert it back would cause the loss of quality. Usage of graphics needs more money, time and manpower. By using 435, we can do these things right on camera by using some user-friendly controls.

When you mention about ramping shots and altering frame-rate, do you think certain mass directors tend to misuse these felicities by overusing it for unwanted scenes?
That is right. We should use them selectively for the right scenes to produce right impact. When we go to films with family, my mother used to ask me why camera is shaking so much (for ramping shots). He used to tell me not to shake the camera so violently in the films I do. These ramping shots and altering frame-rates do disturb family crowds if they were used in unwanted scenes.

What about Super35 camera which is used for Sarkar film?
Super35 camera helps in getting sharper images. 435 camera cans films in scope (70mm). Super35 camera shoots film in 35mm. Then it would be blown in 70mm later in post production stages. Sarkar and Kisna films were shot using Super35 camera.

What about digital cameras? Why have they become a failure?

George Lucas made `Star Wars: The Fanthom Menace' using digital camera. The work of digital camera was not appreciated due to loss of glossiness in film. Digital camera creates artificial colors, which would not look pleasing.

What is your best work till date?
Anandam is my best work so far. It was a very good script. Seenu Vytla had faith in my ability and never interfered. There were many our-door locations. We shot the film by following odd timings in order to give importance to the lighting. We used to start shooting at 5 PM when we needed fog effect. When waited for the right time in order to have good backlight for certain scenes. A cinematographer needs lots of time in order to get his best work out and I got it all for Anandam film.

Anandam had debut artists and who could come to sets anytime you want and could wait for what ever time you need to get the right light. What about senior artists?
When we make films with small time artists, we have the luxury of enhancing the quality of the output with nice cinematography. When busy artists and big stars are involved, their time becomes more important that any other time. When a busy character artist or comedian comes, all he asks is when we are going to let him free as he has another crew waiting for him for another film. When we are faced with certain conditions, we can't perform our duties to the fullest.

How do feel about working with Nagarjuna in Manmadhudu. It was Nagarjuna's Shiva that inspired you to become cinematographer?
It is like my dream come true. Nagarjuna is my favorite actor. I was impressed with Shiva on the screen. When I worked in photography department for Antham, I was in awe of him. I carried reflectors for Antham film and I was the cinematographer for Manmadhudu film. It feels so good. I have put in extra efforts and more passion in my work to do justice to the opportunity provided by Nagarjuna to me.

However good the cinematographer is, if it were released in a bad theater the total work would be useless. Right?
In many of the theaters, they try to save the cost of burning less carbon which effects in bad projections. In some theaters, the size the screen does not match the film and upper part of the film (usual hair) of actors get cut. I find only few theaters in Hyderabad to have right projection system. After Prasad Multiplex has come up, I stopped watching films in other theaters of Hyderabad. However, I find that the projection systems in most of the theaters in rest of AP are good.

You seem to have done 90% of your films to the directors from Varma School. You have done most of Teja's films. Is it not dangerous to be associated to one group, which restricts others from approaching you?

I have soft corner for Teja because whatever I am today, it is because of Teja. I am proud of film and would love to associate with all his films. At the same time, I am open to all the directors.

Do you follow certain ground rules while shooting scenes of various types (comedy scenes, action scenes, songs etc)?

Comedy scenes: People come to theater for entertainment and laugh their hearts out. When we shoot comedy scenes we make sure that the image on screen is clean without any distractions. We use glossy light for pleasantness.

Fight sequences: We select a scheme depending on whether the film is shot outdoor or indoor. Since lots of fight sequence have rope work we need to use contrast light in order to make the graphics guy life easier to remove them during postproduction stages.

What are uses of trolley shots?
To build up tempo. Trolley shots enhance the film's grammar.

Do you follow any books for reference?
I am an avid reader of a monthly magazine called American Cinematographer. It gives complete technical details and analysis about latest Hollywood films. Since most of the films are simultaneously released in India, the technical aspects mentioned in that magazine help me to analyze the cinematography in Hollywood films. I would get an understanding about what kind of shots can be taken by using certain lenses and cameras.

Which film impressed you the most recently?
Black is one film that made lasting impression on me. I could not sleep for 2-3 nights as I felt my work is so inferior to what Ravi Chandran has done for Black. I also admire Thiru's work for Hey Ram film. I love the work of Hollywood cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

Who are you favorite Indian cinematographers?

Santosh Sivan and KV Anand

Most of the nationally acclaimed cinematographers are from Tamil film industry. Why is it so?
It depends on the director. If director has the different script, then the cinematographers explore new techniques and methods. It also depends on the audiences and Tamil audiences encourage wide verities of films done with different subjects. They support experimental films as well.

What is your future ambition?
When PC Sreeram name appears during title cards, the people in Tamil Nadu clap for him. That is the kind of status any top cinematographer should enjoy. I want to be the top guy in my profession and win the laurels.

For any man in film industry, the ultimate goal is going to be direction. I am also interested in the direction. But first I want to be the top most cinematographer.

Mr C. Venkat Reddy: Award Winning Farmer from AP

AP farmer applies for patent for process to sustain soil fertility

ONE need not resort to the age-old practice of crop diversification or apply fertilisers to sustain soil fertility. According to Mr C. Venkat Reddy, a farmer from Alwal near here, fertility of soil can be sustained for years by replacement of the topsoil with sub-soil.

After successfully experimenting the technique for three years in his fields, Mr Reddy has now applied for an international patent for his process under the World Trade Organisation's Patent Cooperation Treaty. The Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre has helped him in filing for the patent.

Almost 15 years ago, Mr Reddy deepened a well in his grape orchard and pumped the water mixed with sub-soil from the well into the garden. That year, the grapes yield had increased from a normal of 150 per kg to 250 kg per plant.

Surprised, Mr Reddy started examining the reasons for the steep increase in the yield though he did not apply any additional fertilisers or chemicals. He came to a conclusion that the increase was on account of the soil dug out of the well and distributed to the plants mixed with water. This realisation, Mr Reddy told Business Line, made him to explore how to sustain soil fertility. Eventually, he experimented with digging a long stretch of 4 ft deep and 2.5 ft wide trenches in a row to replace topsoil with sub-soil after harvesting each crop. Result was that the output of his paddy crop shot up to 10 tonnes per hectare from 5 tonnes continuously during the three years.

He said that he had successfully adopted the same process for growing vegetables and wheat. He had not applied any artificial fertilisers except bone meal, castor and neem cakes as the sub-soil was rich in micronutrients. "Besides, there is no problem of weeds sprouting all over the cropped area."

Mr Reddy said that by using his process the cost of cultivation would go up by Rs 400 per acre. But to that extent, the farmer could save on chemicals and fertilisers. And, with a substantial increase in crop yields, farmers could realise higher incomes.

Though Mr Reddy had applied for patent of his process on June 28, 2004, he said that Indian farmers were free to use his technique. "The patent is meant only for international applications and use of the process by the corporate sector," he added.

Famous Reddys: Sameer Reddy - Interview

Famous Reddys: Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman Apollo Hospitals Group

His dream is to make India the Healthcare Destination of the World.

Two decades ago, Dr. Reddy lost a patient who couldn't make it to Texas for an open heart surgery. This was the milestone in the Indian Healthcare Industry. Today people have the opportunity in India to receive the best that healthcare has to offer worldwide.

Driven by a deep urge to create world-class medical infrastructure in India and make it more accessible and affordable to a large cross section of our people, Dr. Prathap Reddy opted to give up his successful practice in the US to return to India in the early eighties.

Thus, Dr. Reddy began what was truly the process of revolutionizing the path of the Indian Healthcare Industry. Undeterred by initial constraints Dr. Reddy succeeded in setting up the first center of the Apollo Hospitals Group in Chennai in 1983.

This was soon followed by India's first hospital consultancy body - the Indian Hospitals Corporation - and the commissioning of two more Tertiary Care Centers in India. Not only did he set a precedent for corporate healthcare in the country, but the Government of India soon recognized his enterprising efforts leading to

» Financial institutions amending their funding legislation to include hospitals
» Board basing the scope of medical insurance.

On an upswing since then, today the Apollo Hospitals Group has over 22 centers in major metropolises in India with a combined turnover of over US $ 100 million.

Apollo over the last decade, has demonstrated that Indian skills are equivalent to the best centers in the world and has produced world-class results in the most complicated Cadaver Transplant.

Having steered the Apollo Hospitals Group to a number of locations within India, Dr. Reddy embarked on an Asian expansion plan with the first clinic in Dubai established in March 1999. Now, projects in Sri Lanka, Africa, Bangladesh and Oman are on the anvil.

His newest initiative is to integrate into healthcare, the digital nervous system that will eventually create a virtual Apollo Center anywhere any time. Apollo's major Web initiative, Med Varsity -a virtual medical university providing total access to experts in the field of medicine anywhere in the world and "MEDNET" - Hospital Systems Management package are slated to transform the way medicine is practiced in the country.

His plans for improved accessible and affordable healthcare for the millions of our people are an ongoing process and to bring country-wide, comprehensive health insurance scheme to our people is now his obsession.

The telemedicine technology that has been successfully introduced by Dr. Reddy in India will be a key enabler in transforming the healthcare delivery in India. His blueprint for the nation includes setting up of many rural hospitals. Dr. Reddy is now looking at secondary health centers in semi urban and smaller cities and has already identified 23 sites for the same. The maiden effort in this venture has been at Aragonda, his native village and Dr. Reddy envisages that this center will serve as a model for all such projects of the Apollo Group in rural India.

Dr. Reddy has been a keen promoter of active research and exchange programmes for Doctors at Apollo with leading medical institutions for providing excellent opportunities for clinical interaction with their counterparts abroad and also for constant update of their knowledge for the optimum benefit of the mankind.

Recognizing his pioneering role in transforming the Indian healthcare industry, the Government of India awarded him the prestigious Padma Bhushan in February 1991. He was also presented with the Sir Neel Ratan Sarkar Award for medical excellence in June 1998. Nominated by Business India as one of the Top Fifty personalities, who have made a difference to the country in the fifty years since Independence, the country has certainly recognized his contributions. The Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh has conferred the Award of fellowship Ad hominem.

Dr. Reddy's firmly believes that the Indian doctors have not got their true entitlement. He is convinced that India is not only well poised to meet the healthcare challenges of the millennium, but also equipped with the talent and strength to contribute in further developing the health and economy of the world.

Dr. Premchandra Reddy: Gifted Cardialogist, Enterprenure & philonthropist

Dr. Prem Reddy was born in a rural village in Andhra Pradesh India. He and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1976 (with hopes of a brighter future). He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease at the Down State Medical Center, S.U.N.Y. in Brooklyn, New York. In 1981, he moved to California and established his medical practice in the High Desert area of Southern California.

Dr. Reddy is double Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He was awarded the honor of becoming a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (F.A.C.C.) and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (F.A.C.P.). During his 25 years of practice in the High Desert, he has been deeply committed to the service of his patients and has performed more than 5,000 cardiac procedures, including coronary angiography and angioplasty and permanent pacemaker implantations. Due to his dedication, his practice thrived.

Dr. Reddy founded Desert Valley Medical Group (D.V.M.G.), a multi-specialty medical group, in 1985. DVMG later became PrimeCare International, Inc., a physician practice management company with operations in several states including California, New York , Florida and Oklahoma.

In 1994, Dr. Reddy built from the ground up an 83-bed acute care hospital, Desert Valley Hospital, in Victorville, California. Desert Valley Hospital received unprecedented accreditation with "commendation" in its first year of operation for the high quality of its services and continues to lead all hospitals in the area with the highest survey scores.

PrimeCare International, Inc. grew to be responsible for over 250,000 managed care patients. In 1988, Primecare was sold to PhyCor, a Tennessee-based publicly traded company. Unfortunately, the success of Primecare could not be sustained under its new management.

Dr. Reddy founded Prime Healthcare Services (PHS), Inc. In 2001, PHS purchased the failing operations of Desert Valley Hospital and Desert Valley Medical Group from Phycor and was able to turn them into successful entities that were once again able to serve the community and provide the highest quality of care.

PHS then acquired Chino Valley Medical Center, a 126 bed acute care hospital. The hospital was in bankruptcy and was purchased through the US Bankruptcy Courts. PSH was able to not only pull the hospital out of bankruptcy within a year, but also transform the hospital into a success. In January of 2006, PHS acquired The Sherman Oaks Hospital and the world renowned Grossman Burn Center, a 153 bed acute care facility in Sherman Oaks, California. In July of 2006, PHS acquired a 102-bed acute care facility in Montclair, Montclair Hospital Medical Center. In October of 2006, PHS acquired three acute care facilities in Orange County from Vanguard Health Systems: the Huntington Beach Hospital with 141 beds, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital with 131 beds and the West Anaheim Medical Center with 219 beds.

Throughout his career, Dr. Reddy has been committed to serving the communities in which he works. In 1989, he established the Desert Valley Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization with an initial gift of $1million. Since that time, he has contributed over $5-million dollars to the Foundation. The Desert Valley Charitable Foundation serves the health care needs of the High Desert communities in many ways, including a free public health library, a scholarship program for students in the health care field, and the support of other health care related charities.

Dr. Reddy is also an active philanthropist, contributing to numerous charitable causes. He greatly values education and has donated extensively to providing opportunity for education within the health care field. He sponsors many annual scholarship grants to students interested in the health care field. His charity and generous contributions have often been recognized and awarded. The Victor Valley Community College named their student health clinic, "Dr. Prem Reddy Student and Staff Health Center" and its allied health program, the "Dr. Prem Reddy School of Allied Health and Nursing," in honor of his $1 million dollar donation to the program. The Western University of Health Science in Pomona , California , named its largest lecture hall the "Dr. Prem Reddy Lecture Hall," in honor of his many contributions to education in the health care field.

Dr. Reddy has contributed not only to education, but also to various social service causes. He has been honored with many prestigious awards for his commitment to social service. His many awards include: Entrepreneur of the Yea, given by the Ernst & Young Accounting Company, Inc. Magazine and Merrill Lynch Financial Company (1994); Republican of the Year Award, awarded by the San Bernardino County, Republican Central Committee (1995);Victor Valley College Foundation Distinguished Service Award (1996) and Member of the Order of William Harvey, awarded by the American College of Cardiology. The Inland Empire Leaders of Distinction honored Dr. Reddy with the "Life Time Achievement Award" (2003). Dr. Reddy is the recipient of several honors from the American Heart Association for his exceptional contributions, including the "Friend with a Heart" (1996) and the "Honoree of the Year" (2004) awards. The Boy Scouts of America, Inland Empire Council, recognized Dr. Reddy as the "Distinguished Citizen of the Year" (2005). The Circle of Care Foundation and Children's Burn Foundation of Sherman Oaks, California. honored Dr. Reddy for his contribution of $1 million (2006). Dr. Vara Prasad Reddy: Shantha Biotechnics

Dr. Vara Prasad Reddy: Shantha Biotechnics

Focusing on Much-Needed Vaccines

Profile: Shantha Biotechnics

In a nation of more than 1 billion people, the importance of vaccines goes beyond healthcare—it is a matter of national security. Armed with this belief and a philanthropic vision that most Indians could be protected against hepatitis, DT–Polio, and other afflictions, Dr. Varaprasad Reddy entered the nascent Indian biotechnology sector in 1992 and has since managed to threaten the monopoly of large laboratories. That year, the Hepatitis B vaccine cost $33 per shot, and yet some families were subsisting on less than $1 a day. Meanwhile, India was importing only 180,000 doses per year.

"I wanted to do something about this, but I received harsh responses from companies when I mentioned producing here," says Reddy, managing director of Shantha Biotechnics Ltd. (Hyderabad). "We therefore decided to do it ourselves, and with the help of a financial partner from Oman, we revamped a full lab. I also wrote to 70 Indian scientists that were working abroad and asked them to join the project. Three of them came, and we started our team from there."

Thus began a movement in India that can be credited for the birth and rise of most of what is today India's biotechnology sector. "In October 1995, we could open our first facility, by which time we had cloned, fermented, and purified the antigen and were ready for scale-up. The country went from 180,000 doses in 1992 to today's 90 million doses, out of which 50 to 55 million doses are produced by Shantha." The move also triggered an influx of new entrants, which unexpectedly eroded prices and put the relatively young sector in difficulties. From $1 a dose, prices fell rapidly to the price of 4 rupees, slightly less than a single US cent.

Dr. Varaprasad Reddy

Companies like Reddy's had to move to new markets to survive: Following successful prequalification by the World Health Organization, the first granted to an Indian company in 2002, Shantha struck a deal with UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, and today supplies 52% of the UN agency's hepatitis vaccine for global use.

Global demand diversified and combined vaccines such as DT–polio, and newer products such as erythropoietin (EPO) or interferon were rapidly added to the company's products list.

Despite being a global company and a seasoned biotechnology player, Shantha has a turnover that ranges from one tenth to one hundredth of most direct western competitors. "Equivalent hepatitis products to ours are sold for $70 in the US, $40 in Europe, and we are selling our vaccine at 23 cents. The same thing happens for our EPO." In these conditions, the results posted aren't that impressive, but Reddy is confident that they will triple within a few years.

Shantha captured the attention of French vaccine powerhouse BioMerieux, and by the end of 2006, the Lyon-based company acquired a 60% majority stake in Shantha. With this incorporation in BioMerieux's global network, Shantha is expected to become a major research and development center for the French company and a global hub for vaccine development.

"Indian companies will look forward to find western sponsors for contract development and contract manufacturing," said Reddy. "We cannot have our own intellecutal property, because of lack of resources, but our innovation in India will be useful for western companies."

Dr. Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy ( Dr. YSR)

Dr. Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, is an astute politician and a charismatic mass leader who has carved for himself a niche in State politics by his exemplary devotion and dedication to the uplift of the downtrodden and neglected segments of society. Born on July 8, 1949, in Pulivendula in the backward Rayalaseema region, YSR has always struggled to secure the rights of the poor and the underprivileged.

Son of late Sri Y.S.Raja Reddy, a dynamic leader in his heyday, Rajasekhara Reddy evinced interest in politics right from his student days. While studying in M R Medical College, Gulbarga, Karnataka, he served as President of the Students union. He was elected leader of the House Surgeon's Association in S V Medical College, Tirupati. After completing MBBS, he served as Medical Officer at the Jammalamadugu Mission Hospital for a brief period.

In 1973, he established a 70-bed charitable hospital, named after his father late Y.S.Raja Reddy at Pulivendula. His family established one polytechnic and one degree college in Pulivendula, which were later handed over to the well-known Loyola group of institutions.

Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy's sound business acumen, entrepreneurial skills, and, above all, his transparency brought him laurels in the business arena.

On the flip side, his success also brought him many adversaries, political and otherwise, who were desperately looking for a shred of evidence to prove umpteen charges against him. In the end, their mud-slinging did not yield a single point that could paint the mass leader in bad light. In fact, his detractors became red-faced, as they had to swallow their words.

Groomed by a family deeply involved in public service, YSR entered active politics in 1978 and contested elections, four times to enter the State Legislative Assembly and an equal number of times to enter the Lower House of Parliament. A winner in all that he does, YSR won all the elections he contested. Even today his admirers exclaim: "He (YSR) defeats defeat."

During his 25-year-long political career, YSR has served the people in multiple capacities, both in Government as well as in Party. He was President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) twice - 1983-1985 and 1998-2000. During 1980-1983, he was a minister holding important portfolios related to Rural Development, Medical & Health and Education etc. From 1999 to 2004 he was the Leader of Opposition in the eleventh state assembly.

As a champion of the masses, his stentorian voice in the assembly, raised particularly during debates that sought to lend voice to the voiceless millions, forced the Government to retrace several anti-people steps it contemplated. YSR has been instrumental in orchestrating several mass struggles, while highlighting issues facing peasants, weavers, Dalits, youth and women.

His relentless fight for clearance of pending irrigation projects, particularly in the backward Rayalaseema region, has earned for him a special place in the hearts of millions of farmers. His unremitting struggle against certain anti-people economic measures that were sought to be introduced in the name of "reforms", including the frequent increases in power tariff and indiscriminate privatization of public sector units, exalted him
Now, as Chief Minister, the crowning glory of this studded political career, he can proudly claim to be the quintessence of a politician who, with vision focused on the coming generations as well, has earned the title of a statesman. Amidst a bewildering number of turncoats among politicians, who thrive in "shifting loyalties", YSR stands out as a sterling example of the old guard in pristine Indian politics.

This explains why he has never turned his back on the Congress party, which nurtured his political moorings. The lure of power and pelf could not divert him, when the party was briefly out of power, from his mission to hold the reins of power as a trusted lieutenant of the Congress and, more importantly, as a darling of the masses. Sworn in as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 14.05.2004.

A modest Personality: Dr.Reddy, unlike most politicians, reflects the spirit of a true Indian who walks his talk. While his thought is dressed with all that is modern and ennobling, Dr.Reddy's person is invariably clothed in traditional costumes that include dhoti and a shirt made of handloom cloth. In all of his public and private conversations, he speaks from the core of his heart. Naturally, he hates hypocrisy

YSR's Personality: As a demanding Chief Minister, YSR expects bureaucrats to do their job meticulously, and present before him only facts that are shorn of all publicity-oriented and manipulative figures. He does not tolerate hype and extravaganza in communicating official messages. He wants incontrovertible facts stated in a simple language that is intelligible even to the unlettered, because taking administration to the people is an article of faith for him.

His Philosophy of Life: Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy strongly believes that the human life is a boon provided by the Almighty to share one's blessings with others, while serving less privileged human beings.

YSR's Personality: "Don't count the years you want to live. Ask yourself how much you have done for society at large with whatever opportunities the Almighty has provided you", is Dr. Reddy'sword of advice for those who have excuses for not doing even what is within their means. It is this humane principle that prompted him to take pioneering steps to ensure delivery of social security pensions to the needy in the first week of every month

His stature: Though measuring 5´7´´, Reddy looks majestically

simple in his appearance with an ever-smiling genial countenance. This in fact overshadows his unfailing willpower to achieve his targets with the resilience and tenacity of a spider.

When YSR undertook his unprecedented 1500-KM-long Padayaatra (march on foot) in scorching sun during summer in 2003,covering backward areas of the state in particular, few people could discern the underlying motive: knowing first-hand the real problems of the people in their own language and their doorstep.

His Mission: As around 75% of the population in India depend upon agriculture for livelihood, most administrative efforts should be focused on the rural economy, he believes.

His `pastime':If any scheme or programme under formulation is placed before him for approval, its outcome is a foregone conclusion that is dependent on Dr. Reddy's invariable query: "How best will it benefit the people at large or ensure good governance?" A curious `pastime' of Dr Reddy is to feel the pulse of people in rural areas on Sundays through the Rajiv Palle Batta

The Rajiv Palle Baata is a novel mass contact programme under which the Chief Minister reaches out to even unmotorable areas in the rural areas for personally collecting feedback on the implementation of various programmes. This programme has become extremely popular, because it highlights not what the Chief Minister does in the glare of official publicity, but what his officials may not have done in the people's own words.

His Approach: In view of the rational changes brought about in administrative matters following the success of Rajiv Palle Baata, the Chief Minister now extended the programme to urban areas through Rajiv Nagara Baata. The Chief Minister's emphasis on development of the rural economy does not presuppose a blinkered approach towards new and emerging technologies.

Dr.Reddy is committed to a balanced approach towards giving thrust to information technology, bio-technology and all sectors that enhance industrial and agricultural production. His watchword is total transparency in all transactions and deals that envisage public-private partnerships or involve private investments. Because, YSR believes he is simply a custodian of people's trust that is invaluable.

Our Core Values: Care, Concern and Commitment.

Our Philosophy: Children learn differently than adults. They need hands-on experiences and get-on-the-floor teachers. They need warmth and attention. They need enthusiasm and encouragement. Most of all, they need the joy and challenge of doing it themselves. Because that's what helps children learn & grow and that's our mission at KinderKare.
Each child is a unique individual: The safety, health, physical, social and mental development of children is of paramount importance. We help each child develop at his/her own pace by applying a holistic and age appropriate programme of guided free play, structured class time and field trips.

The first few years of childhood are instrumental in setting the pace and quality of future development. The inputs a child receives during these years in terms of affection and positive stimulation are crucial to the way a child will later interact with the world. At KinderKare, our primary focus is on caring for the child, ensuring that he/she feels secure and wanted.

You have great hopes for your child. We understand that. That's why we take pride in providing a nurturing environment for learning readiness, giving your child the tools needed to move toward academic achievement and lifelong success. Balance is the foundation of our operational philosophy, and we put it into daily practice through our innovative Balanced Learning curriculum. This age appropriate, structured curriculum assures that children are nurtured socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually, and develop into complete and well-rounded individuals. This approach offers parents peace of mind. In the long run, Peace of mind leads to a happy balance between career and family life, a balance that is becoming more and more important to today's parents.

Background
He is a native of Konkuduru, East Godavari. He finished his Masters
Degree in Commerce. He was always interested in films. He used to
watch a lot of movies. And, of course, he wanted to be a part of the
film industry. So he tried for it.

He started his film career with Pagadala Padava. Although he worked
for it, the movie never got released. His film career had a 10-year
gap after that. Then he did a small role in Kirathakudu. He did't
feel comfortable doing small characters. Moreover, he was never much
inclined towards acting. So, he quit acting.

His friend Achi Reddy gave him the moral support when he wanted to
turn director. He was very nervous in the beginning. He provided a
great deal of support. He felt very comfortable in the role of a
director.

After the long gap and re-evaluation of himself and Achi Reddy, they
started their own banner - Manisha Films. They released a dubbed
movie Server Sundaramgari Abbayi. After two more dubbed movies, they
decided to go for a direct movie. That's when Kobbari Bondam came
out. 'S. V. Krishna Reddy provided the story, screenplay and music.
After Kobbari Bondam, he ventured into direction with Rajendrudu
Gajendrudu.

S. V. Krishna Reddy did sing in Ugadi. He has touch with classical
music. However he doesn't feel that he has that great a singer in
him. So it turned out to be just a one time thing. He also learned
classical dance.

S. V. Krishna Reddy has directed 28 movies so far. Among them he
personally likes Aahwaanam, since it discusses the 4000 year old
tradition of marriage.

He now is a TF for Life Sciences 1a at Harvard College.

Jai Ram Reddy: Indo-Fijian Statesman

Jai Ram Reddy (born 12 May 1937) is an Indo-Fijian statesman, who has had a distinguished career in both the legislative and judicial branches of the Fijian government. In 1998, he received Fiji's highest honour, the Companion of the Order of Fiji, in recognition of his services to his country. As leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), he was Leader of the Official Opposition from 1977 to 1983, and again from 1992 to 1999. He went on to serve as President of the Fiji Court of Appeal. He held this post briefly in 2000, and again from 2002 to 2003. On 31 January 2003, the United Nations General Assembly elected him as a member of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which is responsible for the prosecution of war crimes.

Education and early career
A lawyer by training, Reddy was admitted to the bar in New Zealand in 1960, and in Fiji the following year. From 1961 to 1966 he was Staff Solicitor and Associate at the law firm of A. D. Patel & Co in Nadi, Fiji. From 1966 to 1968, he served as Crown Counsel and was Principal Legal Officer in the Attorney-General's Office from 1968 to 1970. He was the senior partner in a law firm of Stuart Reddy & Co of Lautoka, Fiji. From 1988 to 1997, he was sole practitioner in Lautoka.

Political Career
Reddy entered politics when he was appointed to the Senate, in 1972, by the then leader of the opposition, Sidiq Koya. In 1976 he was instrumental in bringing the two factions of the party together. Reddy replaced Sidiq Koya as leader of the NFP in September 1977, following major internal strife which had resulted in the party's missing out on forming the government despite its narrow victory in the election of March 1977, and its subsequent crushing defeat in a second election held to resolve the political stalemate in September. Under his leadership, the NFP made substantial gains in the election of 1982, but fell short of ousting the long time Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, and was subsequently deposed as party leader in favour of Koya in 1983. Reddy briefly served as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice in the Bavadra government, in April and May 1987. Following the military coups of 1987, however, he again took over the leadership of the NFP, and continued to lead the party throughout the 1990s. In the elections of 1992 and 1994, the NFP won a majority of the 27 seats in the House of Representatives then reserved for Indo-Fijians.

In the late 1990s, Reddy decided to negotiate with the Prime Minister, General Sitiveni Rabuka, on amending the 1990 constitution, which was widely perceived as racist and was compared by many to South Africa's apartheid regime, as it guaranteed the political supremacy of ethnic Fijians. As a result of these negotiations, assisted by Sir Paul Reeves, a former Governor General of New Zealand, a new constitution emerged, which removed all discriminatory provisions against Indo-Fijians (except the mainly honorary office of President, which remained reserved for a Fijian hereditary Chief). This was considered Reddy's crowning achievement. His glory was short-lived, however. In the ensuing election of 1999, he entered into an electoral pact with his former enemy, Rabuka, an alliance which proved to be his undoing. Many Indo-Fijians had not forgiven Rabuka for carrying out the coups of 1987 and for his role in the subsequent adoption of the 1990 constitution, and the NFP lost all of its seats. Reddy's parliamentary career of some twenty years had come to an end.

Reddy as judge
In 2000, Reddy was appointed President of the Fiji Court of Appeal. He resigned in the wake of the overthrow of the constitutional government of Fiji in 2000, but was reappointed to the post in January 2002. He resigned the Presidency of the Court of Appeal on 18 April 2003 to take up his position with the Rwanda tribunal, but remained a member of the court. Fiji Television reported on 14 June 2006 that Reddy's term on the Rwanda tribunal, along with that of ten other members, which had been due to expire in May 2007, had been extended to December 2008.
